Head Lights

I’ve made an effort recently, really in the last few years, not to stare at high beams. Too often, I found myself staring directly at the headlights, trying to assess whether or not what I was staring at were actually high beams or not, measuring the amount of strain on my eyes.

Anything above a 7 and I would flash back. A visual honk. A flex in the dark.

So, I confronted this madness by simply deciding not to look at the headlights, whether they were high beams or not. Who knew?

And, I think this is our culture right now.

Well, this is my call to culture, anyway: stop staring at the high beams.

Stop staring at what offends you.

And I think there’s also a call to stop declaring our right to offend.

Maybe we should be kind.

Even to those people blinding us with their high beams.
